Salon Night – It’s Girly but Jesus is Still There!

All night I had this vision in my head!

"I'm not a girl, I'm just painted that way."

“I’m not a girl, I’m just painted that way.”

“oh what a night…”

Let me start by saying something here — I’m a man. That being said I am looking at my purple and pink painted toenails as I type this post! Seriously, there they are on the right…

As the second Disciple Day event of 2013 we decided to have a salon night.  What is salon night you ask?  It is where our 5, 8, and 12 year-old girls invite people in the community to come and have their hair done, their nails polished, and their backs rubbed.

I had the pleasure experience of having my toe nails, and part of my toes too, painted by 5 year-old Disney.  It just feels wrong to have nail polish on; I’m a manly man man!  Is it wrong?

Deuteronomy 22:5 (NIV)
A woman must not wear men’s clothing, nor a man wear women’s clothing, for the Lord your God detests anyone who does this.

Nail polish isn’t clothing is it?!  PHEW!  That was a close one!

Anyhow, I am thankful for everyone who came out.  The girls had lots of fun and some of the (other) nails actually looked very nice.  It was a cool event.

What’s that you say?  What does a salon night have to do with our mission?  With Jesus?  I could make a stretch here and throw this verse out there:

1 Peter 4:10 (ESV)
As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace:

Our girls got much of their nail polish as gifts and used it to serve.  Ok, let’s be real, that is taking the verse in 1 Peter waaaaayyyy out of context.

So what does salon night have to do with Jesus?  Nothing.  It was just for fun!  But, PRAISE GOD, can you guess who was the topic of much of the conversation of the evening?  I’ll give you a clue – He is fully human.  Any guesses?  I’ll give you another clue – He is fully God…  You got it!  CHRIST OUR LORD!

This was a really cool event.  One we will do again!  It wasn’t forced or awkward; Jesus worked His way to the center of our evening and it was awesome as He is an Awesome God.

So, if you’re looking for something “different” for your church or your ministry to try – go for a salon night!  Get some ladies or better yet some youngsters together and setup a simple salon for them in your church or home and invite the community to come and get pampered.  If you can stand the smell of the nail polish (and nail polish remover) you can be sure Jesus can too!

  • Very enjoyable evening! I was fortunate enough to have a massage from the 8 year old. The four of us had a tremendous couple of hours of fun and fellowship.

  • Awww… sounds like fun!! Next time, I will have to get some of the salon options since this time I was busy with the ‘fellowship’ aspect of things.
    (like talking, chatting, blah, blah…)
    hehe 🙂
