Where have we gone?

On February 7, 2013 by Jeremy Durdel

Poof - GoneWe get up early on Sunday morning race around to get ourselves ready. Wake the kids up to a bowl full of fruity pebbles put them in their Sunday best, and comb their hair. Race down the street to church, walk in side, smile, and pretend all is well with the world. After all we made it to church isn’t that what matters to God? This is our duty isn’t it? To show up, sing softly so no one can hear, listen to I hope the shortest message ever, so not to inconvenience our lunch plans, pray maybe but only if we have to, and then dash off to the better part of the day, of coarse a day the Lord has made, now I can rejoice and be glad in that.

May just be a stretch but I don’t really think so, America seems to be more and more annoyed with the thought of church. We seem to do church out of some kind of duty we owe to God, as if He really cares that we would show up at all with that kind of attitude. Like bugs to a bug zapper we fall away into oblivion with no one there to notice or care. Our faith in God is going out the window and we trust in self after all why would we need Him anymore anyways. Look at us we have it all, right? World super power, wealth, status as being the envy of the world. What God? He has never been here for us, we’ve done it all on our own, He is no where to be found right?

Well maybe we should remember the way He dealt with Israel in the old testament. They would fall away into idolatry, immorality, revelry, drunkenness, pretty much see America today you have Israel of old. What would make us think that if Israel, Gods own chosen people, couldn’t escape His wrath, why would we think our insignificant little blip in world (His story) will escape? Read Judges in the old testament. My friends, Family, fellow humans around the globe we are in trouble. Well at least those of us who don’t know God and His son Jesus Christ. For those of us who do know Jesus Christ we have hope. (1 Timothy 4:10)For to this end we toil and strive, because we have our hope set on the living God, who is the Savior of all people, especially of those who believe.

I guess I just don’t understand why we would waste our time doing something, if all it did was suck fun out of our lives and profited us nothing. I mean if we are going to be Christians shouldn’t we be giving everything we are towards that purpose? God doesn’t want part of you, He didn’t just die for Sunday! He died for everyday of our lives! He wants all of us because He paid to have all of us. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.
Instead of playing church it is time to get busy living church everyday! Read Acts this is where the church was started, the foundation of what it means to be a church. They loved on each other like Jesus commands us to John 13:34-35 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another. They gave to those in need like we are suppose to do 1 John 3:17 But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him? They lived community Hebrews 10:24-25 And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.

My prayer for today is that we would see Christ’s church start living real community, loving each other, sharing each others burdens, laughing together, crying together, lifting praise to Jesus Christ our redeemer together!!! Not to forget the biggest reason I think why we are left here after being saved, DISCIPLING, EVANGELIZING. Matthew 28:18-20 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” It gets me excited to see what God will do with us when we get on His program. Until next time YOU ARE LOVED!

Forgiven, not by anything I have done, thank you Jesus, but only because of what Jesus has done for me.

One Response to “Where have we gone?”

  • Lots of intriguing thoughts here! I agree with this post and the comment that was left detailing how church has become an institution that makes it easier to let the lost get left in the dust.. Amen – we need to preach the Godpel and evangelize! Good to read from you 🙂
