The Lords Prayer Matthew 6:5-15 “And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.”And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
I would like to rename this “the disciples prayer” because the Lord didn’t pray this. He gave this as an outline to the disciples so they knew how to pray to God. This prayer while being said in a lot of church’s and a lot of homes was never meant to be a prayer but, a model of what true prayer should look like. The disciples could have asked Jesus to teach them a lot of things like, how to be better fishermen (LOL), how to preach and teach, how to cast out demons or perform miracles but they didn’t. They asked The Lord to teach them to pray. They seen the power that comes with prayer and an amazing relationship that Jesus had with God.
If you are always feeling defeated or like God is so distant, have you ever considered it could be your prayer life. I guess the way I see it is if Jesus, who is God, had to take time out to just be alone with God the Father. Then I guess me a lowly sinner should probably find myself alone with God, just the two of us conversing about the matters of life. Spending time in prayer is so much more than just a wish list of things I want, or confessing sin. Both are important though but, prayer is also a time to give thanks to God and I’m not talking about the quick memorized prayer we say before we eat. I’m talking about heart felt, thanks to God for life, for all the good things He does for us and just simply being thankful that He is God, the God we know from the Bible. Not just from the Bible though, thank Him for who He has personally shown us to be. I can think of several times where God has shown Himself to me just so I would have my own experience, showing me His love, just for lowly me.
Not every time God shows Himself, is it just right there plain for us to see, sometimes we have to be looking. I like and anticipate the many times God just does the little things. One time My wife and I were having a fight and I went out to my secret place for some time to think and pray. While out there, I prayed to God telling Him I wish He could be here to give me a hug. About two weeks later I was away on a retreat and part of the retreat was a group of about 150 to 200 people had shown up just to give hugs to the people at the retreat. Now, I only asked for one hug, God gives us more than we could ever think to ask for. Our God is generous. I know you are saying how is that answered prayer? Well here on earth we are the hands and feet of Jesus and that night those people were handing out hugs from God and didn’t even know it.
I know you are probably thinking prayer doesn’t work I’ve tried before, He doesn’t answer. Well a lot of times we are so vague about what we need that even when He answers we don’t see it. We need to be specific but, I need to warn you, be careful because I’ve prayed for somethings and have gotten it but, because of the way I asked He made me laugh because I had not thought it all the way through.
I guess what I’m trying to say is answered prayer is for real, God really does come through, maybe not the way we want or expect but, He does come through. Try adding time to pray, if you already pray put more time in, just being still, or thanking Him, He will hear. We have victory in Jesus and no matter what Romans 8:26-30 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.
Lets face it if we have a connected prayer life with God He will open doors of opportunity to live out Matthew 28:18-20 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Remember YOU ARE LOVED!!!

  • And I have issues with this at times… God is not a vending machine wish granting deity. He might answer one of our prayers in His way, in His timing, with His blessing, with his gentle admonishment, or He might answer our prayers in a way that we don’t see immediately or even at all in this life. He might give us an answer to our prayer that is the opposite of what we thought we wanted, what we thought might be good for us… but we always have to remember that He does everything for the good of getting us to grow closer to Him, to His Son, and sometimes we might NEED to go thru some unpleasantness to see the light at the end of the tunnel…
