Slamma Jamma Saturday

On April 11, 2013 by Chris Avell

It was easy to decide what to do for our “Disciple Day” this past Saturday night as the local Student Lead Action Ministries (SLAM) was holding their annual Christian concert at the Bryan High School.  So my wife Lisa, Jamy, Dennis, and I traveled with a group of seventeen kids down the road and to the concert – we walked; it is about 1.5 blocks away.

With kids ranging in age from 18 months to 16 years of age, Lisa seemed sure that someone would get lost, hurt, forgotten, or worse…  PRAISE GOD that we all made it to the concert (and back from it) safely.  Prayers answered!

Altars of AthensThe big featured act at the concert was House of Heros…  A long-established Christian band with quite a following.  They didn’t disappoint – they were talented, polished, and their experience definitely showed.

House of Heros may have been the featured act, but Jesus Christ was the true headliner… and an enthusiastic and talented group of youngsters who call themselves Altars of Athens kept Him in focus and really energized the crowd for Christ!

There could be no mistake why they were there, and it wasn’t just to entertain.  Were they entertaining?  Yes.  But there performance was so much more than that.  They were like a blazing fire on stage – burning with excitement for their Lord and Savior – and that fire spread throughout the crowd!

Psalm 104:1-4
Bless the Lord, O my soul!
O Lord my God, you are very great!
You are clothed with splendor and majesty,
    covering yourself with light as with a garment,
stretching out the heavens like a tent.
He lays the beams of his chambers on the waters;
he makes the clouds his chariot;
he rides on the wings of the wind;
he makes his messengers winds,
his ministers a flaming fire.

There were many other memorable moments at Slam Jam, one that stands out was Mary Juarez of Never Let Go Ministries sharing about the loss of her son to drugs, and calling kids into a real relationship with God – the only one (thing) who can fill the holes in your heart.  AMEN!

It was a great event; we look forward to going again next year.  Congratulations to Dominic Meija and the SLAM team (all comprised of high school students)!

As great as Slam Jam was, the highlight of the day for me was once again the answer to a prayer.  I am not going to share the details here (sorry) but I will close with this very relevant verse from God’s Word…

Luke 15:3-6
So he told them this parable: “What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the open country, and go after the one that is lost, until he finds it? And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep that was lost.’

PRAISE GOD!
