Slaying Goliath and Launching UFOs
I have been lax about posting lately so this is two-in-one…
When our friend Luther Rupp suggested we get some kids together and show them how to make sling-shots and then provide paintballs as ammo so they could shoot them my first thought was… YEAH BABY!
This was an experience the kids would remember and greatly enjoy. 15 kids and no adults (I am counting Dennis , Luther, and Myself as kids because, well – we match them in maturity much of the time) participated as Luther taught us how to make, aim, and fire *REAL HOMEMADE* slingshots. Perhaps most importantly Luther taught safety and common sense when using the slingshots and I meshed the whole event together with the story of David & Goliath.
1 Samuel 17:50
So David triumphed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone; without a sword in his hand he struck down the Philistine and killed him.
Not only did the kids have a great time, they were reminded that with God all things are possible (Matthew 19:26) – even a young boy slaying a mighty giant. This was perhaps illustrated best when the littlest girl of the bunch, Disney, was the [first] one to hit “Goliath” on the forehead and deliver the fatal blow!
We all had a great time grilling (hotdogs), chilling (making slingshots), and killing (mannequin giants) and… Nobody got hurt! PRAISE GOD!
Ah… Flying Chinese Bags of Fire, 18 kids (from infant to teen), a Few Adults, and lots of Wind and Trees — sounds safe and sane, right? This was an amazing night because the Lord delivered some new friends to join us! Not only did we get to meet Chelsea Taylor and Chris Smith, we got to meet their adorable children and… They asked us if we could help them find a church home! PRAISE GOD!
The Lord also introduced us to some new youngsters, Kelsey, Alexis, and Matt – some really cool kids who jumped right in and got involved!! PRAISE GOD!! Not only these guys, but a new batch of younger kids who we had run into in the past but never had a chance to get to know and to disciple in Christ. GOD IS GREAT!!!
Now, about the event itself – we got a hold of some sky lanterns which are like mini hot-air-balloons and we had a competition to see:
* WHO CAN GET THEIRS AIRBOUND FIRST
* WHOSE FLIES THE HIGHEST
* WHOSE FLIES THE FURTHEST
* WHO GETS THE BEST “UFO” FOOTAGE ON THEIR PHONE/CAMERA
…But the real fun came as our faith/fear/sanity was tested a bit. Just a couple minutes after the first balloon, belonging to Luther’s team, took flight — the unmistakeable sound of fire engines was heard! I have to admit I giggled as several adults looked panicked and seemed convinced that out little Chinese fire bag had floated somewhere and set some un-expecting building, field, or person ablaze. NOPE!
The fun evening continued and ended with a bunch of kids, including some of the newbies, crashing at our house. We even went on a 1AM Taco Bell run! What a great event it was… How amazing is our God that he allows us to get together and make friends and have a good time even though we have sinned and He paid the penalty!
1 Peter 2:24
“He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.”
